Nothing, Nothing, as Shakespeare would say...

There's this old Victorian custom of the bridal cake. Well, it's not for the wedding, but for the bride's pre-wedding celebration dinner with her girl-friends... or something like that. (My grandmother told me about this when we talked on the phone last night.)

A dime, a thimble, and a ring are buried in the cake. And as you have probably guessed, whoever gets the dime shall be wealthy, whoever gets the thimble shall be a spinster for life, and whoever gets the ring will marry next.

My great-grandmother (her name was Lizzie) got a thimble from her friend's cake. I guess it didn't mean much to her.

My mind is full of school. Nothing more than that. So I can tell you all about irregular Latin verb forms, the frog dissection the Mad Scientists completed today, the loads of government homework that I turned in this morning, and my latest violin etude... and all of those things have meaning and color to me, but they aren't so interesting for anyone else.

I wrote a sea-story last Wednesday. I wrote the introduction, and then my train of thought just stopped. And I refused to force any more out of myself. Yes, the outline and summary and the pictures in my head were all there (still are). But they were too strange (foreign) to write out.

It was based very loosely on "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, only about all the sisters, from the perspective of one (who actually succeeded in becoming a mortal). I left out the moralistic gibberish of the end, changed the fates of the several mermaid sisters, but still kept the basic legends intact...

See, there's a strange association of the fairy tale with the Disney movie (which I hate), that won't allow me to take the legend seriously. Mermaids? All one can think of are those silly fawn-eyed animated characters.

Well-oh-well. It's sitting on a legal pad in my desk. I may just post what I have some day, to get it out of my system.

...This blog needs another picture to liven it up, now that my profile (and therefore most of the color) has been relegated to the bottom of the page. For the very next post, I'll go find one...
